Our school

We are a well-established, nurturing village school, for children aged 2-11 years old. We have our own well established and very popular nursery and preschool which provides a wonderful start to your child's journey with us!

We are situated within the heart of the community of Locking in North Somerset.

Our children are well supported, are challenged and inspired by our excellent staff, who aim to provide an extraordinary education that brings out the best in all of our young people, regardless of their ability or background. Everyone works together to ensure all pupils have a wide range of opportunities and experiences to fulfil their potential. Developing the 'whole child' is at our core.

Locking is extraordinary because of many things.

The energy, commitment and passion of a loyal team bring the school to life every day, creating opportunities both in and out of the classroom that will help children in the future and support them to want to be something better and reach their full potential, whatever that may look like as an individual.

Our children bring delight and positive energy to all areas of school and they inspire us to be the best we can be; showing resilience and determination to tackle all the challenges life throws at them.  We aren’t a huge school, but neither are we small and yet we have huge beautiful grounds in which to learn, grow and play in a green, fresh and clean environment. Children are nurtured by the school in a family atmosphere and a lot of our children are able to walk the distance to school and meet friends along the way.

By being a part of Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN) we work very closely together with our other schools across the area. Because of this we have access to large sports, cultural and arts events. Working together, our teachers are able to consistently broaden their skills in foundation subjects such as art, music and sports/PE. We access larger sports, cultural and arts events meaning the children of Locking (and beyond), have more aspirational experiences and meet other children and people from all walks of life.

Our bespoke curriculum (a set of subjects and standards) is challenging and ambitious, but relevant and accessible to all learners, promoting passion and resilience. We try to provide rich and first-hand learning opportunities that will take children beyond their everyday experiences. In turn, children will develop a strong work ethic and interpersonal skills as well as becoming independent, creative and critical thinkers.

Our community is very strong. A village school provides a lovely environment for pupils, staff and the whole family to engage in positive learning experiences both in and beyond the classroom. The PTA, FOLS (Friends of Locking School) work very hard to organise events for the children and the wider community. Our events out of school time, such as the summer fair and fireworks night are an opportunity for the wider community to integrate into and appreciate school life, many of them enjoying coming back to the school they went to. If you have your own Locking heritage, there’s a good chance that your parent, grandparents, even great-grandparents came to Locking Primary School.

Strong community connections provides valuable learning experiences for children, beyond our bespoke curriculum and children have the opportunity to work out in the community, developing an understanding of how a positive community works. Children leave the school with a sense of belonging to a tight-knit community where they have had the confidence and skills to make decisions, reflect upon their choices and make connections. Through the curriculum at Locking, we hope that all children will be equipped with the powerful knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

Although children have been educated in the village since the 1800’s, the school which we now all know and love has been around since the 1960s. And today the school remains, a traditional village school, but now with a modern twist and a focus on the future and we have definitely advanced into the modern age! In fact, we were selected by the Department for Education (DfE) to be one of the first recipients of the Connect the Classroom programme.  This investment funding programme run by the DfE. Provided us with an upgraded wireless networking solution to improve IT infrastructure and in the classroom, reliable high-speed internet connections and infrastructure are more important than ever!
